Sri Lanka

I thought Myanmar was remote, Sri Lanka seemed like the middle of nowhere. Except at the beaches, I saw very few other travelers. You can read up here

We spent the first half of our 11 day trip getting all of the cultural stuff out of the way then headed to the beach for the rest of the time. In Dumballa we visited the ancient royal capital to climb this big rock:

The food was good except that people eat with their hands, which is cool, but any leftover food is thrown back into trays to be used again. There was one particular type of rice that we nicknamed "poop rice" because it literally smelled like human poop.

Cricket: the sport of choice. Here is Jeff, with a batting stance of a champ.

Our next stop was Nuwara Eliya. Since we did virtually zero research, we were surprised to find that the weather in this elevated town was around 40 degrees. We were way to cold in our shorts and t-shirts so we had to buy some gear.

20% of the world's tea is grown in Sri Lanka

Our next stop was Hatton to climb Adam's Peak.

Not mine

It is known for the "sacred footprint." Buddhists believe it holds the footprint of Buddha, Hindus the footprint of Shiva, and Christians the footprint of Adam (people say Sri Lanka was the original Eden). We started climbing the mountain at 1am and reached the top by 3am. We then waited in the freezing cold for the sunrise. Everyone was bundled up in blankets and spooning like crazy. We were getting strange looks for our lack of clothing. It was also required to be barefoot.

After this all-nighter we ditched our other plans and headed straight to the beach.
