Malaysia/ Borneo

Last month I spent two weeks in Malaysia. The first few days I was on mainland Malaysia in Penang and Kuala Lumpur and the rest of the time I was in Malaysian Borneo.

 Here is the city of Georgetown in Penang, Malaysia

Georgetown is an old British colonial town but with strong Chinese, Malay, and Indian influences. The food was unreal.

 This is where I slept in Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur…it was so scary.

Next we headed to Borneo. Our original plan was to go check out this place called Mulu. If you have ever seen the Planet Earth episode with the massive caves with towering piles of bat poop, that's where we were going. Our rough plan was to fly from Kuala Lumpur to the city nearest Mulu and take a bus the rest of the way. However, once we got to that city, we discovered that the only possible way to get to Mulu was by plane. So we bought a $30 flight and headed to Mulu National Park. Looking out the window of the plane, all I could see was rainforest.

Every evening there is a giant bat exodus where millions of bats leave their caves to go hunting. It was really cool.

We also went on a river safari and we spotted some wild pygmy elephants

  and a spider

We also spent a couple nights on "Survivor Island," where the first season of Survivor was filmed

We spent the remainder of our trip in the city of Kota Kinabalu, Borneo.
